Kindred Britain

Learning Outcomes
English, History (Undergraduate)- Explore the connections between British cultural icons, including writers, from history
Functionality
This visualisation was created by Stanford University. It is a network diagram showing the familial connection between nearly 30,000 iconic figures, many of them British. For example, it shows 19 degrees of separation between Sir Isaac Newton and US President John F. Kennedy.
It starts with an overview of people to select from. Next, the user clicks & drags one person’s icon to another, prompting the display of a network diagram comparing the two in finer detail. When the user hovers over a person’s icon in the network graph, their name and dates of birth/death are shown. On click, a tooltip with more detail appears. A timeline is shown along the bottom, and a geography panel is available to show the physical distribution of people in the network.
